Welcome
I am a third year student studying BA(hons) Film, Televison & Radio Studies at Staffordshire University. I am due to graduate next year and as part of my final project I need to develop and create a radio documentary. As a young woman I regulary read magazines and it has come to my attention that these magazines contain a lot of articles that focus on body image of both the reader and celebrities alike. After reading some articles about young women who have had eating disorders due to wanting to look like a celebrity role model I wondered whether they were influenced by magazines.
As you may be aware more and more magazines aimed towards young women appear in local newsagents. These magazines are full of pictures of female celebrities, "fat" and "thin" and are jammed full of stories about celebrity image. They also regulary contain exercise plans and fad diets. Does the content of these magazines affect the way young women look at themselves in a mirror and what are the serious health implications?
Mirror, Mirror is a proposed radio documentry aimed at discovering the real influences magazines have on young women aged between 16 and 25 and the possible health implications. It aims to discover what techniques magazines use to help them sell, how they affect a young womans perspective on personal issues and the concerns other people have to the potential problems that may arise.
